The NAME dilemma...

First- I am very excited about the gift that we are sending to our sweet little girl who is waiting for us in China!
I think she will like what she is getting!
2 Dresses
Ni Hao Kialan doll
Sunglasses
Hair bows
Sandals and crocs
Candies
Photo albums of her new family!
and
Letter from her new family!

Here are the photos we are sending!!
I can't wait until she is in them!!

NOW... on to the latest dilemma!

Her name...

I love her name, I mean really love it!

BUT

It's time to fess up...

We actually have a dog named Mia...

who is (gulp) still alive...

I know your beginning to thing I'm CRAZY!

Why would I name our child the same name as our... ahem... dog?

I really don't know why except I thought maybe we could just simply change the doggies name...

Yep, that's what I thought ;-)

After 8 years of calling her Mia, I thought we could just change it...

Just as simple as that! After all we change our children from China's name, just like that!

Well, the dog is wondering what the heck is wrong with her family because we keep calling her "Mia", then "Maya", the "O'mia- maya", then "hey you" get over here or whatever else comes out of our mouths!

The big kids are getting a kick out of this!
It's like comedy hour at our house!

They refuse to change her name and and are having quite a good time watching us try to figure it out!

So... I bring this to you.
The other name we like is Mary Elizabeth.
The rest of the fam is good with that but I still really like the name Mia for our sweet little girl...

Yes, I am very stubborn...

It's hard to make a huge change at this point because we think of her as Mia Elizabeth.

So go ahead and give me some feedback!
Please don't use words such as ridiculous, crazy, nutty, stupid, whacky or what planet are you from...

 keep it kind ;-)

Thanks!!

Later addition to post-

Okay- What do ya think about this-
 Formal name
Mary Elizabeth
nickname and what we call her-
MIA
???

i"m not help, we loved the name Ally for our last little one but we ended up naming her Alivia because we have a 14 year old dog named Allie. lol..... I just couldn't get past it. I to love the name Mia but if you have associated that with a dog for many years its hard. Could you do Amia?

did you know that dogs only hear vowels? really.
so...it made me think of a dog name my mom gave one of my dogs when i was a child. Pia. should i tell you what it stood for? pain in the a... not that your dog is a pain in the rear.
call her mia, it's her, your daughter, I mean. call the dog pia or tia or sia...blah blah!

Jean, your posts are such a bright spot in my day. I just love your honesty! I like both names, but you should really do whatever you think is best.

I love the name Mary Elizabeth. It's not as common as Mia today, and would be just beautiful. Not to mention...both Mary and Elizabeth in the Bible were extremely amazing women!!

I agree....with everyone. haha. I'd go with Mia, tho, if that's the name you really like. I happen to really like that name myself.

the only good thing about the horribly long adoption wait is that you can pick a name and then change your mind as often as you like......I like Mary Elizabeth alot...it might be alot for a little one to learn to spell...ask Katie her opinion on that.....even though our new boys names are embroidered on their backpacks, I had a few moments of second guessing this week....:)

Hmmm.....Melia, or maybe spelled Malia is Hawaiin for Mary.....how about Melia Elizabeth? or Amelia Elizabeth? Yu could call her Lia from either! Would that be close enough?

If you like Mia Elizabeth, then I think you should keep that name. I'm sure you can tell I like the name Mia too:)

I think Mary Elizabeth w/ Mia as her nickname is a great idea! You could even end up shorten both names and call her Mia Beth for her nickname! Cute!

Just do what you like best. Names are such a hard thing!

You just crack me up - you funny girl !!! :)) I do love Mary Elizabeth. Very Biblical, and old fashioned. Very beautiful name. I like Mia as well, but I really love what Susie up above suggested - Amelia Elizabeth. But in the end, Mama....you have to go with what you like and are the most comfortable with. :))

I forgot to say I just love seeing the fun things you are sending to Mia/Mary/Amelia/Melia. ;)) She is going to love everything so much. I just love all of the pictures you are sending as well. I can just see her sitting and studying each picture. What fun ! :))

I think I already shared this with you :-)
... but when I showed my kids a photo of my mom (as a kid) and her dog and said, "This is who we named your brother after" they all said "Mom, that's a GIRL!"
And I replied, "Not the girl, the dog!"
Rob :-)
At least Rob had long since gone to his reward, but I would so let them share, Mia is too good to waste!

Stay with Mia! I love the name and it is your first choice.

What about Moriah?

Love Mary Elizabeth! You could call her "M" "E" - like emy:)

I don't comment often, however since you are looking for suggestions I thought I might say stick with your first choice-especially if you love it and it's how you have always thought of her. Why does it matter if her name is Mary Elizabeth and you still call her Mia-to me there is no difference between Mia as her actual name or as a nickname. Does that make sense?

I like Mary Elizabeth, and agree with Lori's suggestion that you call her Mia Beth...that is really cute!

We SERIOUSLY thought of doing the same thing!!! We've always loved the name Luke, and we named a (4 year old) dog Luke. We thought we might change Luke's name to Duke or something and name our son Luke. But, David (my husband) said the big boys will surely tell him he was named after the dog, and so we couldn't do it. I do think that might be a problem for his/her identity to think they were secondary to the dog!! Anyway, I like the name Mary a ton! BTW, we have a July 20 log in date (found out today)!! Whoo HOO!

I would stick with the name you love and not worry about the dog. Call the dog Lia or something. :) We used to have a dog named Molly and then we named one of our daughter's Molly. The dog was no longer alive when we used the name for our daughter, tho. Yes, sometimes she gets teased about it--but I LOVED the name. And it fits her. :) She is fine with having the same name as our dog--especially when I tell her it was the best dog we ever had. :)

MIA!! Gotta stick with it, thats HER!

you crack me up!!! :) I love the name Mia too! I like Laura's idea - call the dog Tia - that makes perfect sense. But I know how stubborn big kids can be! We had a bunny with 5 names - cause no one could agree on 1. :) When we got our puppy earlier in the year - I finally had to make an executive decision and name her! :)

this is very interesting to me :) We actually have been tossing around boy names for a few months but we got PA today so it seems like we need to really pin point one!THe name I really like happens to be the name of some of our friends boy about the same age!?!
AGh :)It is hard naming w/ a face too :)

Face it. We are not normal anyway. I say keep Mia. I let my husband talk me out of my last name and now I'm sorry.

I'd say stick with Mia because you love it! You can definitely use Mary Elizabeth as a formal name and Mia as her everyday nickname.

As for the dog, I agree that you should call her something similar so she recognizes her name, but not actually Mia ~ Tia, Lia, Zia, Pia, Fia, Thia!!

Your Mia just looks like a Mia!

All the best,
Nicole A., now in LA
